Basmati Rice Packaging Options

Jute, non-woven, BOPP, woven PP, vacuum pouches, cartons and jars: how each pack performs, which sizes suit which market, and what the label must carry.

A 5 kg bag of Noreen Traditional Basmati in a matte green pack

Basmati is often bought on the shelf before anyone has tasted it, so the pack does real work. It has to survive a sea voyage, stay dry, keep insects out and look right to your customer. Here are the options we pack in, with what each one is good for.

Materials

MaterialTypical sizesStrengthsWatch out for
Jute bags5 to 50 kgNatural, traditional look; strong; breathable; reusableHeavier than plastic; fibres can shed, so a food-grade inner liner is advisable

PET jars0.5 to 2 kgTransparent, resealable, premium shelf presenceBulky, so fewer tonnes per container

Choosing a size

Retail markets usually sell 1, 2, 5 and 10 kg packs. In the Gulf, 5, 10, 20 and 25 kg bags are common for household and food service. Wholesale and catering buy 25, 40 and 50 kg bags. Smaller packs need master bags or cartons for transport, which adds cost and reduces the tonnes per container. Our container loading guide gives typical loads for each size.

Useful features

  • Handles, die-cut or stitched, on 5 to 25 kg bags
  • A clear window, so shoppers can see the grain
  • Zip or reseal strips on 1 to 5 kg pouches
  • Stand-up gussets, so the pack stands on the shelf
  • Easy-open stitching on bulk bags for kitchens
  • Anti-slip finish on bags that will be stacked high

Our own Noreen 5 kg pack is a matte stand-up bag with a die-cut handle and a window onto the grain.

What the label must carry

Labelling law is set by the destination country, so confirm the rules with your importer or authority before artwork is final. Most markets expect:

  • product name, including variety and form, for example "1121 Basmati Rice, Golden Sella"
  • net weight
  • country of origin
  • name and address of the packer or exporter, and often the importer
  • batch or lot number
  • packing date and best-before date; many buyers also want the crop year
  • storage instructions, and usually cooking instructions
  • any certification marks you are entitled to use, such as halal
  • nutrition information and local-language text where required, for example Arabic for GCC markets

Rice packed in India also carries the packer's FSSAI licence number.

Private label

Many importers sell under their own brand. The exporter packs to your artwork and your market's labelling rules. Plan for these steps:

  1. Agree the bag type, size and features.
  2. Supply artwork, or ask the exporter's designer to adapt it to the bag.
  3. Approve a printed proof before production.
  4. Allow time for printing: printed laminated bags usually need cylinders and have minimum print runs, so agree quantities early.
  5. Approve a filled sample bag before the full order is packed.

Protecting the rice inside

Whatever the pack, the rice inside must go in at the right moisture, and bags must be sealed or stitched properly. For long voyages, correct container lining, desiccants and fumigation matter as much as the bag. Sella rice is more robust in storage than raw rice; see steam vs sella basmati rice.

Our packaging options run from 1 kg pouches to 50 kg bags, with private label on request. Ask for sample bags in the formats you are considering.
